It might surprise you to know that my average coaching client is a law firm partner with 11-20 years in practice. My coaching clients have four to 40 years of experience. Some might think that coaching is most helpful for training new lawyers. I am not sure I would agree. New lawyers need substantive legal training best obtained by working closely with experienced lawyers in their firm. CLEs augment vital on-the-job training and mentors are a valuable resource for learning about firm culture, unwritten “rules” and expectations.
Coaching helps lawyers at any experience level learn, practice and implement new skills and habits. This can result in increased productivity, more captured billable time, working effectively in teams, and learning to delegate work and supervise others. Coaching is most powerful when it is targeted to or at least includes firm leaders and supervising attorneys.
