Many cultures and religions place special significance on the dawning of a new year. It is a time to reflect on the past, and envision the year to come. It can be a time of atonement, renewal and fresh starts. As you consider how to move into this new year, here are some questions to consider:
- If you made all the rules, what would your work and life look like this year?
- Is this a year for rest and maintenance, or action and growth? What would a “rest and maintenance” year look like for you? What would an “action and growth” year look like?
- What are your top 3-5 priorities in order of importance this year? Consider making one list for personal and another for work priorities.
- Make a list of your health priorities for the year and calendar dates to work on them:
- Catch up on routine medical and dental care including any needed cancer screenings.
- Investigate mental health support or coaching to see if either would be helpful.
- Make and implement habits that support a healthy diet, regular exercise and better sleep.
- Reduce opportunities to use devices to gain control over digital habits.
- What would an ideal week or month look like that includes scheduled time for pursuing your top personal and professional priorities? It isn’t necessary to work on each of them every day or week, but having some consistency and planned time to attend to them is key.
Making a living is always important, as is making the most of your time at work and at home. Give yourself a break from the relentless pursuit of growth if that is what you need this year. It can open up a whole new world of opportunity you had never considered.
